From as far back as the 17th Century, during the Georgian period, a neoclassical style of furniture was unveiled.

In Colonial North America, the influence of the Georgian style, (vaguely evident prior to the American Revolution) did not become popular until the late 1700's into the 1800's, which was during the Thomas Jefferson era, hence his elegant designs for the University of Virginia at Charlottesville.

When the "Cabinetmaker" first began producing furniture in the Virginia Colony, the "William and Mary" look

was created.  It was initially inspired by the "Queen Anne" style from England, though the furniture was not a copy

of English designs.  New interpretations of established decorative details and unique structural forms were

developed, perhaps an expression of American independence, hence the Colonial style of furniture was born.
